Internet regulation vs Free
Internet regulation vs Freedom of Speech Essay MGM v. Grokster case determines the file sharing software. Grokster is a software development company that makes peer-to-peer file sharing software making it possible for all users to share files. However, one possibility with the usage of this software is that some users start sharing copyrighted files. Most commonly copyrighted music mp3 files are shared. In this case court determined that whether making of such software can be regulated. Proponents argue that file sharing is very popular and important technology implemented today in several companies for important business tasks. It is also commonly used by individuals for normal sharing of files for important reason. Only for just one reason it is not possible to shut down the whole business. This is just beginning of the exploration of current use of technology which may expand later. Court determined that whether Grokster should be liable for this file sharing that involves copyrighted material. The pro of this case is that today as weââ¬â¢re bound with each other via world wide networking, it has changed the way of our living. Regulating things going on Internet has recently affected our legislations. With internet networking we can easily connect together and communicate. However, recently several cases have emerged and made it more complex to handle people communicating on the internet. There is another law case that is very hot these days, a Yahoo case. Yahoo has been disgraced in France and now fighting with Chinese government on several issues of free speech. All legal aspects of internet regulation include several security measures and protection from threats. In addition, the way of communication on the Internet has made it much easier for anyone to pass any remarks to any person far away from the location. Speech and communication on the internet has to be regulated in order to protect people from any kind of abuse. According to the Judge decision of freedom of speech that the Yahoo had the right in favor it. The con of this case is that though, we know that all humans have rights. Freedom of speech is one of the rights an individual have by birth, but this right has a limitation as well. The limitation is decided by the exposure of the speech on makes in his social environment. Freedom of speech is a right until this freedom doesnââ¬â¢t hurdle the otherââ¬â¢s same right. And if this come to happen the ââ¬Ërightââ¬â¢ of one rests no more with him. Many firms and legislations are now restricting making use of language and topics on the communication board and email. For example, many big firms like Mircrosoft do not allow specific topics to be discussed on their forums. In China a journalist was imprisoned because of the fact that he forwarded an email that contained an inappropriate language terms. Many U. S. firms are now help resolving issues in China regarding communication. Different law now governs freedom of speech on the Internet. Whatever the case it must now be the matter of great concern to regulate everything that is going on Internet. Similarly, USA and other countries several such cases were detected. Many groups, forums and companies do not allow free talk on politics and religion in order to avoid hot debates involved on these topics. In the present circumstances, especially whereby the social environment has become digital, itââ¬â¢s become very crucial to maintain an equilibrium so that each one can enjoy his right of freedom of speech in the most effective way. The most prominent platform for present digital social environment is ââ¬Ëinternetââ¬â¢ which has not only reduced the distances among the continents, but has also opened the opportunities for individuals to have their say on broader channels. This outgrowth in the outreach of common manââ¬â¢s voice has lead him to be confident on one hand and made others to suffer from the un censored voice. Law gives the right to speech, freedom of thought, freedom of choice, freedom of choosing a religion and changing beliefs. Though we have right for freedom of expression but this does not determine that we can use abusive language, make false statements, and defame others. References Internet Regulation law. A view from the bridge Essay Example for Free
A view from the bridge Essay Upon hearing the story of Vinny Bolzano in the first scene of the play, we are immediately introduced to the aggression of Sicilian justice, and are given a glimpse of events that are to unfold. After Beatrice has told Catherine the story of Vinny Bolzano, Eddie exclaims On his own Uncle! , expressing disgust that anyone could possibly do such a thing to a relative under any circumstances. At this point in time it is totally out of Eddies character to go to the immigration authorities, at this time in the play he would not even think about it, but he is later driven to it by what he feels to be a personal tragedy on an epic scale. This tells us that when Eddie informs the authorities he knows exactly what effect this will have on him; he knows of his inevitable fate after word gets out. The Sicilian values of justice are totally separate and exempt from American law. In some ways it is more lenient; it does not condemn Marco for killing Eddie because of two things; firstly, Eddie reported him to the authorities, and secondly, he won in a fair duel. Nevertheless, as we see, its sentences are far harsher. Sicilian justice is not even a harsher version of American law. As we hear from Alfieri at the beginning of the play, in Sicily, from where there fathers came, the law hasnt been a friendly idea since the Greeks were beaten. It is totally separate and in direct opposition. Sicilian justice demands that Italian-Americans help immigrants and pay money for them. American law is exactly the opposite. Alfieri sums up the idea of justice in his opening lines, Oh, there were many here who were justly shot by unjust men. This shows the idea that these gangsters, despite being criminals, shot men justly as far as Sicilian justice goes. Alfieri is the bridge between the Sicilian justice (in so far as he is an Americanised Sicilian, experienced enough to see Eddies fate), and American law (in that he is a lawyer). Moreover, he is a bridge between the two cultures. He acts within the bounds of American law, generally on behalf of the immigrants, who distrust him because he has made the step up into an American job, and therefore American money and lifestyle. Due to the range of Alfieris experience, he is also the bridge between the characters and the audience. Alfieris role as a bridge in the play, and the very essence of the play as a clash of cultures is perfectly shown in Alfieris first narration at the very beginning of the script. Firstly, Alfieri introduces the idea of the Sicilian way of life in America, and addresses the issue of Sicilian justice, referring to the 1920s and 30s gangsterism in a tone suggesting the glory days. Still, Alfieri claims that now they are quite civilised, quite American, and that his practice is entirely unromantic and then of course he moves into the story of Eddie Carbone, an illustration of how Sicilian ways are still dominant to this civilised and American culture. The play A View from the Bridge is about a clash of cultures, or perhaps more about the effects of mixing two cultures into the American cultural melting pot, and the clashes this causes between the cultures. The plot of the play itself is more about the personal tragedy between a parents incestuous love for his daughter, and a girl who is growing up to become a young woman and wants to behave in accordance with her womanhood. This is the subject of the play, rather than the clash of the cultures, this is not to say that the culture difference is not relevant, on the contrary, it is a main theme of the play, but it only aggravates the personal problem. It confuses Eddies situation, as he is obviously more in favour of Sicilian values, but finds his personal situation with regard to Catherine threatened by Sicilians, and therefore has to resort to using American culture to neutralise the situation. It makes the divide that Catherine has to cross into womanhood much greater, making it necessary not only to become a woman from her childhood under Sicilian ideas, but also to become a fully, modernised, Americanised, independent woman. In addition, it supplies Eddie with a method of solving his personal problem, if in a rather extreme manner. It makes the consequences of doing so much more dramatic. The personal tragedy suffered is fuelled by great love, which leads to insanity, giving the play the qualities of a Greek tragedy, if not a somewhat contemporary Greek tragedy. The Use Of Borrowings In Political Articles English Language Essay
The Use Of Borrowings In Political Articles English Language Essay The purpose of this research is to investigate what the notion borrowing means, how words can be borrowed, what types of borrowing are. To accomplish this goal theoretical research and analysis of political articles were done. The result of the research showed that words are frequently borrowed indirectly, they have Latin or French origin and there are many phonetic and morphemic types of borrowing in political articles. Key words: borrowing, language, word. INTRODUCTION Language is an important tool of communication. A man cannot develop without it properly. It is a main mean due to what a man can express his feelings, emotions and attitude towards reality. Language is the most powerful armor what a man can posses. A man can praise with a word, admire, or even kill with it help. An ability to use words correctly, to be eloquent was highly appreciated since the ancient times. This ability helped to cope with problems, decide and convince. Especially, eloquence was very useful in political discourse. Politicians used all their knowledge and rhetoric in order to achieve their goal. They very carefully chose words when they performed with their speech on stage. Every word carried a definite meaning and served for a particular purpose. Politics, economy, science, education are spheres which demand a specific language. Such language helps to separate one sphere from another. A good example is a political language. The vocabulary of political language is very rich and expressive not only due to the primordial words of a language, but also to words borrowed from other languages. The goal of the research is to investigate the use of borrowings in political articles. The enabling objectives were set up to achieve the researchs goal: to analyse theory on borrowings; to find out the types of borrowings; to analyse political articles; to find out how words are mostly borrowed; to summarize and interpret findings. The research is based on a hypothesis: words, used in political articles, are borrowed frequently in the indirect way and most of them have Latin or French origin. The methods of the research: Theoretical (the analysis of the information and theory on borrowings, their types, ways of borrowing); Practical (the analysis of political articles, the analysis of the examples). Short outline of chapters: The first chapter gives the analysis of the theory on borrowings. The second chapter provides the findings of the research and presents the summary of the research. THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF BORROWING This chapter deals with theoretical material on what borrowing is, what ways of borrowing exist, and what types of borrowing present. Definition of Borrowing As postulated in Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics, a borrowing is a word or phrase which has been taken from one language and used in another language (1992: 42). According to Reformatorskiy, There is no language on earth which lexicon would consist only of its own primordial words (1997: 139). Every language uses borrowings, which help enrich its vocabulary. He states that Borrowings are consequence of interaction of different people and nations on the bases of political, trading and economical relations (1997:473). The English language has been open and not been afraid of borrowing words from other languages during the whole history of Britain. It came in a very close contact with different people and languages thereby enriching and widening its lexicon and expressiveness. As stated in Online 7, there many various borrowings in English from such languages as: Scandinavian, e.g. they, there, them, skin, sky, skirt. Celtic, e.g. clan, flannel, slogan, London, Thames, Dover. Dutch, e.g. yacht, buoy, leak. There are words borrowed from Dutch, which are related to shipping. German, e.g. bear, kindergarten. Italian, e.g. piano, solo, pizza, balcony, opera. Spanish, e.g. guitar, barbeque, ranch. Arabic, e.g. alcohol, zero, tariff. French, e.g. government, parliament, court, nation, property, royal, money. There are enormous amount of words from French in English language. Latin, e.g. bonus, area, collapse. Greek, e.g. comedy, tragedy, physics, zoology. A great quantity of words were borrowed from both, Latin and Greek, especially during Renaissance Period, when was renewed the interest in classical languages. Ways of Borrowing There are two ways of borrowing: Directly Directly means that borrowing happens spontaneously, directly from other language (Reformatorskiy, 1997: 475). e.g. Developers analysing the data warned that in some cases it could be incomplete. (Online 12) Data: L. Eng. (Online 16) Indirectly Indirectly means that borrowing happens through mediators. Mediators usually are other languages (Reformatorskiy, 1997: 475). e.g. à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ follows a long-running campaign by the Guardian and campaigners for open government.'(Online 12) Campaign: L. L.L. O.Fr. Fr.- Eng. (Online 16) Types of Borrowing There are four main types of borrowing: Phonetic borrowings As stated in Online 17, phonetic borrowings, called also loan words proper. Words are borrowed with their meaning, spelling and pronunciation. Translation loan or calque Translation loan or calque is word- for word (morpheme for morpheme) translation of some foreign word or expression. On such cases the notion is borrowed from a foreign language but it is expressed by native lexical units (Online 7). As indicated by Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics, another explanation of translation loan or calque is a type of borrowing, in which each morpheme or word is translated into the equivalent morpheme or word in another language (1992: 78) Semantic borrowings According to Online 6, semantic borrowings are such units when a new meaning of unit existing in the language is borrowed. Morphemic borrowings Morphemic borrowings are borrowings of affixes. (Online 17) To sum up, words can be borrowed from different languages as Latin, Greek, Spanish, Arabic, Celtic, Scandinavian, etc. There are two ways of borrowing: direct and indirect. Moreover, one can see that there are four main types of borrowings: phonetic, translation loan or calque, semantic and morphemic borrowings. PRACTICAL ANALYSIS OF BORROWING This chapter deals with a practical analysis of articles and provides examples of this analysis. Phonetic borrowings e.g. à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦publishing council tax collection rates and data about the performance of services such as rubbish collection and recycling (Online 13) Rate: M.L. rata M.Fr. rate Eng. (Online 16) e.g. Mr Blair moved from a twice weekly 15 minute session to a once- a week 30 minute showdown. (Online 14) Session: L. sessionem O.Fr. session Eng. (Online 16) e.g. The fact that most cash from President Obamas $787 billion stimulus package (Online 18) Stimulus: Mod.L. stimulus Eng. (Online 16) e.g. The two sides and would shape their policy agenda. (Online 10) Agenda: L. agendum Eng. (Online 16) Translation loan or calque e.g. Since his announcement Saturday that he would be the crucial 60th vote necessary (Online 11) Saturday: English Saturday partially calques Latin DiÃâââ¬Å"s SaturnÃâà « day of Saturn.(Online 9) e.g. The opportunity to acquire a potential masterpiece. (The Economist, p.7) Masterpiece from Gr. or Du. (Probably translation of Dutch meesterstuk or German Meisterstà ¼ck: Dutch meester and German Meister, master + Dutch stuk and German Stà ¼ck, piece of work.) (Online 15 ) Semantic borrowings e.g. The bail-out of the banks coincided with the loss of jobs. (The Economist, p.3) The German semantic word die Bà ¤nke originally meant a bench. The English noun a bank has more than one meaning: it means a place where people and organization can invest and borrow money; a sloping raised land along the sides of a river; a pile or mass of earth, clouds; a row of similar things, a bench. However, German later borrowed the other meaning of a bank from English, and today also means a place where people and organization can invest and borrow money; a sloping raised land along the sides of a river; a pile or mass of earth, clouds; a row of similar things.'(Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary 2008: 104) Morphemic borrowings e.g. Critics say the job was always earmarked for a Liberal Democrat, irrespective of their qualifications. (Online 10) Irrespective = ir + respective from L._ ir (not). (Online 16) e.g. A cut in the basic rate of tax, a hugely unpopular move he later admitted was a mistake. (Online 8) Unpopular = un + popular from O.E. _un (not) (Online 16) Overall, political articles are full of different types of borrowings. Almost every second word may be considered to be as a borrowing. There are great quantities of phonetic and morphemic borrowings in political articles. Translation loan or calque may appear in colloquial language or literal language rather than in political one. CONCLUSION In conclusion, all words, which are used in a definite language, form its lexicon. Besides it own words, every language has borrowings in its vocabulary. The main purpose of borrowings is to enrich vocabulary of particular language and to make notion more precise. Drawing conclusion is completely based on the results of the analysis of theory on borrowings and the analysis of political articles. On the basis of data collected from political articles, most of words are borrowed indirectly. When analysing the results of the theory and political discourse, the research proved that, the types of borrowing which are mostly presented in political articles are phonetic and morphemic borrowings. The results point to an interesting trend that most of borrowings come from Latin and French languages. The hypothesis of the research has been proved, because in political discourse most of words are borrowed in indirect way and most of them has Latin or French origin. THESES Most of words are borrowed indirectly. There are four main types of borrowings: phonetic, translation loan or calque, semantic and morphemic borrowings. The types of borrowing which are mostly presented in political articles are phonetic and morphemic borrowings. Most of borrowings come from Latin and French languages. Translation loan or calque may appear in colloquial language or literal language rather than in political one. The main purpose of borrowings is to enrich vocabulary of particular language and to make notion more precise.

Prison Procedure, :: essays research papers
In dealing with Prison Procedure, I feel that many things are put into perspective all the way from intake to the release of an inmate back into the community or until they have served their sentence and their time is up. Everything in a prison must be on close watch. The workers should be watched just as well as the inmates. All the prisons procedures should be followed under a very strict manner to ensure that the prison functions properly and effectively. à à à à à Prison procedure should be very strict in every aspect pertaining to the institution. From the intake, the guards should evaluate every inmate entering the facility and then place them accordingly. There are many different things to look at when considering the placement of an inmate. The age and the nature of the offense are some key ones, also their race. All entering inmates must have full cavity searches prior to being placed in a cell; this is for guard and inmate safety purposes. à à à à à In running the prison the prison should be well advanced and should have only skilled and trained workers working under the institution. There should be no excuse for not knowing the proper prison procedures and rules. Punishment should be inflicted on those who donââ¬â¢t abide be them, for both the workers and the inmates. à à à à à In considering the proper procedure you should think about the inmateââ¬â¢s life, and how to control them. There are many things that can be done to maintain a controllable environment for an institution. Treating the inmates fair and just is one way to not get over emotional inmates that might cause a problem. Another way is providing work opportunities and other recreational activities to keep the inmates busy and to help pass the time. à à à à à The inmates should undergo regular room inspections to inspect for any items or belongings that the prison feels is a threat and that the inmate should not be allowed to have, like any illegal substances or drugs and also weapons or any item that could be used as a weapon should be seized. They should also undergo regular evaluations to see if they have improved while being in prison, and if they will be ready to return to the community when they are granted release. à à à à à The inmateââ¬â¢s health and nutrition is an important part in running a prison. The inmates should be fed properly, and also their emotional status should not be ignored, and it should be taken into account.

Book Review of Fiddling for Norway: Revival and Identity, by Chris Goer
Missing Figures Book Review of Fiddling for Norway: Revival and Identity, by Chris Goertzen. After extensive field research in Norway, Chris Goertzen explores and sorts a folk genre, which by nature resists tidy taxonomy. Fiddling for Norway: Revival and Identity is a successful ethnographic documentation of a musical tradition that is learned primarily by insiders through oral/aural channels and by customary example. Implicitly he asks: how can a book culture audience understand a tradition that does not depend on notation for maintenance or transmission? Likewise, how might we classify a collection of such music? He begins by describing in detail how the revival of Norwegian fiddling took place in the later nineteenth century and what its dimensions and scope have been up to the present. Goertzenââ¬â¢s field methods include participant-observation of local and national fiddle contests in Norway, starting with a year-long stay, while teaching at the University of Trondheim in 1988-1989. He attended the District Fiddle Contest in 1988, the largest national fiddle contest for the normal fiddle, in Rà ¸ros. There he was able to hear and record players from around the country play two contrasting tunes each, which gave Goertzen a large collection to consider. He later returned to Norway during the summers of 1991 and 1993 and conducted interviews, made more field recordings, and mined the largest archive of music for the fiddle, Rà ¥det for Folkemusikk og Folkdans (the Council for Folk Music and Folk Dance), at the University of Trondheim for past interviews and field collections. Goertzen points out that the archival holdings privilege the oldest of musicians and repertories, indicating a belief of Norwegian scholars that ââ¬Å"the pres... ...luable book with appeal for ethnomusicologists, scholars of Scandinavian and European culture, historians, and lay audiences. As Goertzen says, these fiddlers, their large repertoires, and the holdings in archives comprise a diachronic living museum of enormous size. Chris Goertzen has done the English-reading public a great service by producing such a splendid study of this lively folk institution. Works Cited Cowdery, James R. 1990. Macbeth :: essays research papers
Macbeth Macbeth was a general of King Duncanââ¬â¢s Scottish Army, he started off to be a great and devoted man to King and country but many events occurred that lead to the development of many enemies and his death. Macbeth sends a letter to Lady Macbeth telling her of the witchââ¬â¢s proficies in which they said he would be king. After reading the letter a messenger came and told Lady Macbeth that King Duncan will be coming to dinner that evening, she quickly concludes that in order of Macbeth to be King, Duncan must die that very night, She knows that it will not be easy persuading Macbeth to go through with the murder, because she says ââ¬Å"he is the milk of human kindnessâ⬠. When Macbeth arrives at the castle Lady Macbeth greets him by telling him that they must kill Duncan, he first seems hesitant but Lady Macbeth assures him he will be king by the next day. Later that night Lady Macbeth drugged the kingââ¬â¢s attendants when he was asleep, then she gives the signal for Macbeth to kill Duncan, so Macbeth enters Duncanââ¬â¢s room and draws his dagger and kills him, After the deed is done Macbeth wishes he hadnââ¬â¢t gone along with the murder, he expresses this by looking at his hands covered with Duncanââ¬â¢s blood and says ââ¬Å"what a sorry sightâ⬠. After all the investigations the castle dismisses the case as the two attendants the murderers. Once Macbeth is crowned king of Scotland he thinks about the people who would have the closest idea that he was responsible for the murder of Duncan, he then realises the closest person would be Banquo who was there when the witches told the prophecies to Macbeth, and although Macbeth is unsure Banquo is already starting to suspect him of the murder. Days later Macbeth finds out that Banquo and Fleance are going hunting the next day, he firstly arranges a feast in honour of Banquo the day they go hunting to clear his name for any wrong doing, then he hires two assassins to kill Banquo and his son while they are hunting, but first he has to talk Lady Macbeth into it, he does so by scarring her, saying ââ¬Å"we will eat our meals in fear and sleep in the affliction of the of these terrible dreamsâ⬠. The next day just before the feast the assassins enter Macbethââ¬â¢s room and tells him that they have killed Banquo but not his son, because he had fled before they could do so.
