This Month I Began My Internship With The Nonprofit...

This month I began my internship with the nonprofit organization Kids in Need of Defense (KIND). KIND was founded by Angelina Jolie and Brad Smith from Microsoft in order to provide legal services for undocumented children. The organization is primarily funded by donated legal services, the government, block grants and various fundraising events. KIND has its headquarters in Washington, DC, however the organization has ten field offices from coast to coast to better represent children dispersed all throughout the nation. I work in the Newark field office, with Carrey Wong as the supervising attorney for all pro bono programs. The undocumented children that cross the United States border are formally known as Unaccompanied Alien Children, or UAC’s. To qualify as a UAC, a child must not have any immigrant status at entry, must be under the age of 18 and must have crossed the border without a legal guardian. Most UAC’S are between the ages of 4 and 17, and the majority are native Spanish speakers. 95% of these children come from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, which are Central American countries currently facing immense poverty, gang violence and a number of other dangers. These children come here seeking security and a better life; however, these children and often their sponsors that are living in the US do not realize that a green card isn’t just handed to a child who crosses the border. Once detained at the border, children are placed in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, where they are placed in shelters and screened in order to find the motive for crossing the border. These children are then placed into removal proceedings, and often cannot understand the process and are left unrepresented in a full on lawsuit. Each of the issue is analyzed with the help of theories and models. After that, the study provides the solutions based on the findings in the analysis. Woolworths Limited is one of the largest retail organizations in Australia as well as in the international market. The company is operating its business for more than 92 years (Woolworthsholdings.co.za 2016). Woolworths Limited deals with wide product range, which includes clothing items, food items, hardware and financial services (Woolworthsholdings.co.za 2016). However, recently, the company is facing several issues related to its professional accounting, management and public relations. These issues are identified below: Identifying the issue related to the professional accounting at Woolworths Being the largest retailers in Australia, Woolworths Limited has recruited highly qualifies professionals to take care of the accounting department of the company (Rose, Hawryszkiewycz and Kang 2015). However, in recent survey, the management of the company has identified that the professional accountants of the company are facing a big issue in measuring the assets and liabilities of the company of a particular financial year. It has been disclosed in the annual reports of the company that the company follows the accounting guidelines provided by AASB and IASB (Woolworthsholdings.co.za 2016). As in the guidelines of AASB there is no strict guideline regarding the method of measurement of the assets and liabilities of the company, there are huge confusions among the accounting professionals regarding the method of measurement (Cameron et al.2015). Some of the accountants believe that the historical cost method can be followed because that method is easier and simple to understand. On the other side, some of the accounting professionals believe that fair value method is more appropriate for measuring the assets value of the company. However, most of the time, the company has followed the historical cost method for measuring values of its current assets (Kaplan and Atkinson 2015). On the other side, the company has measured the financial assets of it on the basis of the fair value method. These measurement techniques create major problems for the accounting professionals of the company (Collier 2015). If this particular issue at Woolworths Limited is analyzed based on the accounting theory or accounting measurement theory, then it can be identified that both of the measurement techniques are right. However, Macve (2015) stated that Fair value method of measurement is more scientific than the historical cost method. This is because in the fair value method, the accounting measurements are done based on the current market price of the assets and liabilities, which is not possible in case of historical cost method of measurement (Bratten, Causholli and Myers 2015). In case of historical cost method, the value of the assets is determined in an unrealistic way because the depreciation is charged on the assets is not appropriate. Demerjian, Donovan and Larson (2016) mentioned that following the mixed method that is combination of fair value method and historical cost method is not right because the base of these two methods are different. Therefore, measuring the assets based on the mix ed method provides improper value of the total assets of the company (Macve 2015). Therefore, it can be said that this measurement issue of Woolworths Limited is a major accounting issue at current scenario. Identifying the issues related to the management at Woolworths Limited At the current scenario, the management at Woolworths Limited is currently facing several issues related to the managerial activities of the company. The biggest managerial issue that the company is currently facing is related to the managerial decisions regarding the selection of locations and botched store roll out strategy of the company (Zarkada-Fraser and Fraser 2015). This indicates that the management has made mistake while segmenting and targeting the market. In this context, it can be stated that, the management of the company has not followed the STP model properly (Methner, Hamann and Nilsson 2015). The STP model provides the guidelines regarding the segmentation, targeting and positioning activities of a company. If this particular managerial issue of the company is analyzed with the help of STP model, then it can be identified that the company has not focused on the geographic segmentation much. Due to this, the management has taken wrong decision regarding the selection of the locations for the outlets of the company. Feigin (2016) noted that, the management at Woolworths Limited has selected the most unfavorable locations for the business and due to that in 2015, the company has faced loss in the hardware section. Due to this issue, the company is failure to promote itself properly in the market. Due to this, the public relation activities of the company are not effective in todays context. Another vital public relation issue is the public relation agents of the company mainly focuses on the propaganda rather than the ethical promotion. This is directly affecting the brand image of the company. Using the propaganda, the public relation agent of the company is able to attract the customers, but that is creating high level of customers dissatisfaction (Booth and Coveney 2015). Customers come to the outlets or stores of Woolworths Limited and purchase the products of the company, but after using the products, they are not finding the products up to the standard that the company promised to them through public relation activities. Therefore, in the above, it can be identified that Woolworths Limited is facing several issues in professional accounting, management and public relations. All of these issues are affecting the performance level of the company to the higher extent. Therefore, it is very important to identify the proper solutions for these issues of the company. Concentrate on the supply chain management: In the discussion regarding the management issues of the company, it has been identified that Woolworths Limited has the issues in maintaining the stocks at the shelves in the outlets. The company is also losing many customers due to this problem. Therefore, in this case, the company can concentrate on the supply chain management (Hill and Day 2015). The company can introduce better technology to improve the connection between the inbound and outbound logistics. At the same time, the company also requires to recruit efficient employee, who can take care of the stock level in the stores. In order to improve the supply chain management the company can apply the lean management strategies (Booth and Coveney 2015). The lean management system will help the company to maintain smooth flow of stock from the inventory to the outlets or stores of Woolworths Limited. Improve the communication level The management at Woolworths Limited needs to improve the communication level within the organization. In order to improve the communication level, the management of the company can concentrate on the technologies. The internal technology of the company must be advanced enough that provides the scope to run a systematic and smooth communication channel or network within the company (Mortimer and Ingersoll 2015). The company focuses on the online communication system. This will help to decrease the communication time within the company. Concentrate of geographic segmentation: The management at Woolworths Limited must concentrate on the geographic segmentation. Proper geographic segmentation will help the company to identify the right place for setting up the outlets of Woolworths Limited. The study has also identified that the company is recently facing trouble in the professional accounting, managerial activities and public relation activities. However, the study has suggested that the company must concentrate on the fair value method for measurement. On the other side, the study has also disclosed that the company is also facing several managerial issues related to the pricing, store maintenance and communication. The Elves and the Shoemaker Play Review Essay In only my second Theatrical experience since before I can remember. I found myself seated in the Malcom Field theater of Saginaw Valley State University. The Malcom Theater is a very well designed stage for this theatrical performance. It was just large enough to express all of this plays theatrical elements, yet not too large to cause distraction. For about the price of a typical movie ticket I received an hour and ten minutes of comical entertainment. The production presented on October 14 at seven o clock was a theatrical performance called The Elves And The Shoemaker. An adaptation of the classic Grimms fairy tale. The author of the The Elves And The Shoemaker renown author Ric Averill, who also known for writing several other big name shows such as Frankenstein. Averills experience in play writing is shown throughout this dramatic themed childrens play. I believe The Elves And The Shoemakers script was written very well to appeal to its designated audience. It is obvious this play was written for a younger audience. With themes based around loss, struggle, acceptance, and new beginnings all of which are presented from a child’s perspective. The major conflict of the play being the struggle to make shoes for a deadline. It is consideration like that in the script that forms its overall intentions. While the dominate tone of the play was serious, there were more than a couple comedic lines. Most of the plays comedic relief ironically came from the main character of whom arguably was having the roughest time. I believe the author implemented the main character having the most struggle as well as being the â€Å"funny character† as a tactic to engage the younger audience into this story. A tactic I feel took a very good direction. Myself being twenty years old was engaged in what this character would do next. My only complaint about the script was the presence of apparent dead spots. A couple segments in the production which gave you that feeling of wanting something else to happen, mostly in the beginning. I think these spots were only present in the attempt to build up the whole story. If I, a twenty year old guy who must pay attention on the ideals that my grade depends on it, am wondering off to other distant thoughts, imagine an eight year old kid trying to focus. I think some of these areas could have been approached differently. Other than a couple distracting plot advancements I couldn’t help but notice how fast the hour past as I read deeper into the actually story of this play. As with anything in life, the foundation is always the most important part of a theater performance. The script and storytelling really stand out at The Elves And The Shoemaker’s core. The directing of this production really stood out to me. It would not be easy as a director to express the effects of magic, elves, and out of body experiences. All of which is presented with great creativity in this production. Personally, as I read the read the script I sat there wondering to myself â€Å" how are they going to pull that off? † as I watched the play I couldn’t help but feel satisfied in way these mystical things were expressed. Not only did the director do a good job with the fairytale aspects of the play, but everything else seemed to click in a way that immersed you into the plot. As you watch you seem to forget your still seated in the same spot and the stage set hasn’t changed one bit. It isn’t until the lights go out that you snap back into reality and applaud for a performance that took you so far away. Everything from the character positioning to set design, it all worked very well to express the plot of the story. One thing that really caught my eye was the goofy look of the muskets that the soldiers held. I believe the director did specifically designed them to look somewhat goofy to appeal the the younger crowd. That is just one example of the directing that fascinated me. There was nothing about the directing work on this play that I could specifically point out in a negative manor. The acting work in this production was very good in some areas however, I think some characters didn’t fit their role as well as others. The main characters Gunther, and Peter were played exceptionally well. Gunthers character was played to tee. You could feel his grumpy, misunderstood laziness illuminating off him. There would have been no show at all without the excellent role playing from peters character. He expressed peters upbeat, curious, and mostly childish attributes in a way that really drew the audience to him. I was excited to see what he would do next and that is how acting should be. The snobby roles of Trescott and Madame Grotsky were played so well I almost was hesitant to applaud for them at the end of the play in dislike of their characters. The elves were all played very well. Their silliness and singing presented them as appealing characters for the young audience. Some of the actors, mostly the elves, were required to do acrobatics and some light singing. I believe these special demands were produced well. There were some characters I thought could have been better represented however. The character Little Bit seemed a little awkward in her position. Something about her felt completely different than what I would of expected from the script. All the actors did very well expressing their lines in a way in which the audience could could hear and be engaged in. here was even a part where the actors had to whisper amongst each other which played out perfectly. The I was impressed with the over all acting of The Elves and The Shoemaker. The Malcom Theater set the perfect stage for this kind of performance. The stage was the perfect size for every member in the audience to be engaged in every aspect of the performance. The set of the play really impressed me. The stage had to be set up in a fashion that allowed the magical elves to peer into the stage from every direction without being noticed. I am not a director but I imagine this was one of the most challenging aspects in designing the set. Not only was this set up perfectly, but the rest of the scenery had taken no losses in overcoming this challenge. The design of the Gunthers cabin felt just as it did when I read the play myself. With the simple action of a screen coming down, the movement of a tree prop, and some well timed fog makers, a battlefield was created as the second setting of the play. Not only did the scenery project a feeling of a different place, but you felt a whole new time period as well. It was like being taken back in time. All of these elements mixed together made this production feel like an immersive experience. The costume design throughout The Elves And The Shoemaker was appropriate for the time period it represented. The soldiers wore old style vest, pants, and boots that brought you back to looking at old history book pictures. The main characters wore ragged old cloths and leather shoes. Trescott and Madame Grotsky, representing the rich of the era, wore big hair, poppy dresses, and tailed suites. Most of the costumes fit their respected characters. There was one disappointment I had with the costume design. With the script highly expressing the raggedness of the all the elves I had expected their cloths to reflect that view. I could not find any distinct difference in the elves cloths from any of the other characters. This single element distracted me from the performance but it wasn’t enough to ruin the entire event. I never really knew how much effort was put into the light design on a theater performance. I had the opportunity to help set up the lights for The Elves And The Shoemaker. There are over a hundred lights, every single one of them does something different for the show. Because every light is so important, every light must be adjusted and focused to properly complete its function. One thing that really impressed me is the transitions from day to night. With just the right adjustment of light it really felt like the actors were waking to a rising sun. you could really feel that sense of time. Working on the lights was a great experience for me and I now see the great amount of work that goes into light production. The Elves And The Shoemaker was a really impressive performance. A show that was designed to entertain children achieved nothing short of entertainment for myself. I would recommend a performance like this to anyone. As I continue to experience theater I am becoming more impressed with the art all together.
